May is truly when the garden comes alive. The soil is warm, the nights are (mostly) frost-free, and plants are finally ready to stretch, grow, and show off a little color. At the nursery, this is one of our favorite times of year—everything is moving fast, and every visit looks a little different from the last!
🌼 What’s Thriving Right Now
Annuals are filling out beautifully, and it’s time to start thinking full color in your containers and beds. Petunias, geraniums, marigolds, and calibrachoa are all ready to take off and give you nonstop blooms through the summer.
Perennials are also settling in nicely. Once planted now, they’ll reward you year after year with less work and more beauty each season.
🌳 Don’t Forget Trees & Shrubs
Mid-May is a perfect time to plant trees and shrubs. The soil is warm enough for strong root growth, and the earlier you plant, the more established they’ll be before summer heat kicks in. Hydrangeas, magnolias, viburnum, and flowering shrubs are all great choices right now.
🌱 Garden Tips for Mid-May
- Water deeply, not just often—encourage strong roots
- Add mulch to hold moisture and reduce weeds
- Fertilize containers to keep blooms coming
- Keep an eye on nighttime temps just in case of late cold snaps
🐝 A Busy Season for Pollinators
You’ll notice bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds are everywhere right now—and they love a diverse, colorful garden. Planting a mix of flowering annuals, perennials, and herbs helps keep your garden buzzing all season long.
Mid-May is the sweet spot of the gardening season: everything is possible, and the best part is still ahead. Stop by the nursery and let’s get your garden ready for summer color and growth! 🌞🌸
