Flowers: Summer Crush® is most famous for its large, mophead blooms that come in vibrant shades of raspberry-red to pink. The color of the flowers can change depending on the soil pH: Acidic soil (pH below 6) will result in blue flowers. Alkaline soil (pH above 7) tends to produce pink or raspberry-red flowers.
Foliage: The Summer Crush® hydrangea has dark green leaves that provide a rich contrast to the colorful blooms. The foliage is typically large, rounded, and glossy, making it attractive even when the plant isn’t in bloom. In fall, the leaves may take on some yellow or purple hues, adding interest to the garden after the flowers fade.
Size and Growth Habit: Endless Summer® Summer Crush® is a compact shrub, growing to around 2-3 feet tall and spreading about 3-4 feet wide. This makes it an excellent choice for smaller gardens, container plantings, or as part of a low hedge.
Bloom Time: Summer Crush® starts blooming in early summer and continues to produce flowers until the first frost in the fall, making it one of the longest-blooming hydrangeas available. This extended bloom time is a key feature of the Endless Summer® line.
Sunlight: Summer Crush® does well in partial shade to full sun. However, it will perform best with morning sun and afternoon shade, especially in warmer climates. Full sun can result in more vibrant flowers, but the plant may need some protection from the hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch.
Hardiness: Endless Summer® Summer Crush® is hardy in USDA zones 4-9.
Hedges and Borders: This hydrangea can also be planted in hedges or mixed borders, either alone or combined with other flowering shrubs or perennials.
Cut Flowers: The large, colorful blooms are excellent for cutting. They make beautiful additions to flower arrangements, both fresh and dried. Their long-lasting nature makes them perfect for floral displays.
The Endless Summer® Summer Crush® Hydrangea is an exceptional shrub that offers vibrant color, long-lasting blooms, and easy care. Its compact size, extended flowering period, and ability to bloom on both old and new wood make it a versatile and reliable plant for any garden. Whether used as a specimen plant, in containers, or as part of a hedge, it provides stunning color and texture throughout the growing season.
